Beyond the Rainbow: The Urgency, Resilience, and Power of the LGBTQ+ Movement

Written by: Sian Bitner-Kearney

Pride isn’t just a celebration, it’s a revolution. It’s a rallying cry against discrimination, a declaration of existence, and a reminder that the LGBTQ+ community has always fought, and will continue to fight, for dignity, equality, and joy. Pride is the refusal to be erased, silenced, or shamed. It’s the unapologetic embrace of love, identity, and community.

From the Stonewall uprising to the battles for marriage equality, every victory has been hard-won. And yet, the fight is far from over. Today, LGBTQ+ individuals still face systemic barriers: skyrocketing rates of homelessness among queer youth, disproportionate violence against trans people, especially trans women of color, and ongoing legislative attacks targeting the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals across the globe.

The Hard Truth: What’s at Stake

  • Mental health disparities: LGBTQ+ people are significantly more likely to struggle with depression and anxiety due to societal stigma, discrimination, and lack of access to affirming healthcare. Transgender individuals, in particular, experience alarmingly high rates of suicide attempts, nearly nine times higher than the general population.

  • Economic instability: LGBTQ+ individuals, especially trans and nonbinary people, face workplace discrimination, hiring bias, and wage gaps, with many forced into underemployment or poverty.

  • Violence and safety: Hate crimes targeting LGBTQ+ individuals remain rampant, with trans women, especially Black and Latina trans women—facing disproportionately high rates of violence and murder.

These statistics aren’t just numbers, they’re a call to action. Pride isn’t just about rainbow flags and parades; it’s about recognizing these urgent realities and demanding change.

Ways to Support the LGBTQ+ Community

Change happens when individuals take action. Here’s how you can stand in solidarity and create meaningful impact:

  1. Donate to LGBTQ+ Organizations – Support nonprofits advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, mental health resources, and community shelters. Some impactful groups include The Trevor Project, Trans Lifeline, and the National Center for Transgender Equality.

  2. Support LGBTQ+ Businesses – Buy from queer-owned brands, restaurants, and artists. Economic empowerment strengthens the community and fosters representation.

  3. Advocate and Educate – Speak up against anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric, educate yourself and others, and challenge misinformation whenever you see it.

  4. Show Up and Speak Out – Attend Pride events, rallies, and protests. Visibility is power, and collective action sparks systemic change.

  5. Vote for LGBTQ+ Rights – Support candidates and policies that protect LGBTQ+ individuals from discrimination and uphold equal rights.

  6. Be an Ally Every Day – Listen, uplift queer voices, and ensure your workplace, school, and community are inclusive spaces.
